Since there were no other options, I’ll start with the banal. No, not with Mario. Cover yourself with paint, this is a review of the game Splatoon.
Most likely, you have already heard something about this game, perhaps even read and watched reviews. Or not. It was released in May 2015, and already in August of the same year it received a major update. However, let’s not get ahead of ourselves, let’s first discuss in general what this game is. This is a multiplayer third-person shooter where the goal is not to get frags, but, let’s say, to capture territory. To be precise – you need to paint as much surface as possible for your team. At the end of each round, points are calculated based on the amount of territory your squad has painted.
We’ve sorted this out, now let’s take a more specific look at the main game aspects. The first thing you see in the game is the graphics. Let’s start with it. It exists, and given that we play on Wii U, this is already not bad. But seriously, the picture is quite decent, in a cartoon style. Some will not like it, however, in my opinion, this is even a plus for the game – such “panache” will look good even after many years. I won’t rant too much about the graphics, it’s better to look at the screenshots and smoothly move on to the sound design.

With music, unfortunately, everything is not so clear. Originally the game had fun pop punk vibes and I loved it. But after the already mentioned update, almost all the music in the game was changed. She’s still pretty fun, but has lost a lot of her drive. Therefore, I think that it was better before. And the paint is brighter. And the grass is greener.
Other sounds do not attract much attention, although there is still something meditative in the local “splashes” of paint. They are there, they don’t distract, that’s enough.
Before I talk about anything else, I’ll try to explain the basic game mechanics. The only ammunition in the game is paint. It’s also a way to seize territory. Let me explain how it works. We have in our hands a weapon that shoots paint. With its help you can both kill enemies and paint the territory in the color of your team. The more territory your team has painted by the end of the round, the more points your team will be awarded by the judge, a cute fat cat named Judd. Only painting of horizontal surfaces is taken into account, frags are not taken into account at all, although the enemy you kill will leave behind a spot of paint in the color of your team. In addition, you can swim quite quickly in paint of your own color. But I’m getting ahead of myself, let’s first talk about the game character and his abilities.

Our character, called the inkling, has two forms: the first is humanoid, in which we can run, shoot and use special weapon capabilities, which will be discussed later; the second turns us into a squid that does not use weapons, but moves much faster in the paint of its team. This trick does not work in the enemy team’s paint; moreover, it deals damage and slows you down, no matter what form you are in. Using the map on the Wii U Gamepad screen, we can track the movements of our teammates on the map and even quickly move to them by clicking on the corresponding player on the screen. This can only be done while in paint of your color, with a delay of 2-3 seconds from pressing. So you won’t be able to just disappear from the battle.

Now let’s talk about weapons. It is different, there is a lot of it, it is divided into classes: there are also paint throwers that are mediocre in all respects, similar to water pistols; there are sprayers that spit out paint at great speed, but cause little damage; sniper paint launchers with a laser sight, which require time to charge a shot (the longer you hold the button, the farther you shoot), but shoot far and hurt; semi-automatic paint launchers that fire in short bursts; hefty Gatling machine guns that do not fire without first spinning them up; shotguns that hurt a lot, but at a short distance, are poorly suited for painting a level… Even a whole assortment of rollers and brushes that can splash paint when swung and which, in fact, are very convenient for painting a level.
All these weapons have quite a lot of modifications, differing in parameters and a set of additional gadgets – the so-called Sub and Special. The first category includes a variety of grenades, stationary paint sprinklers (similar to garden sprinklers), some homing bombs and some other similar things. The second category is how something more ultimatum is correct. For example, the ability to fire a rocket at a certain place on the map, which will leave behind a huge spot of paint and kill everyone in the affected area. Or the ability to turn into a kraken for a short time, which is invulnerable and kills players of the enemy team with one touch.

All this variety of wunderfavel, as I already said, uses paint as ammunition. The paint is stored in a transparent container behind the player’s back, which serves as a visual indicator of its quantity. Looks like the health bar on the hero’s back in Dead Space. To replenish the paint, just dive into it – go into squid form. Different weapons have different paint consumption, different subs too. Special does not consume paint, but is only available when the special scale is filled. This, in turn, is filled when you paint, and vertical surfaces are also taken into account.

In addition to a wide selection of https://warxbetcasino.co.uk/bonus/ weapons, the game has opportunities for character customization: choice of gender, hairstyle, eye color. All this does not affect anything except the visual component. But the clothes that can be bought in special stores on the main square – the local analogue of the main menu – have an effect. There are three types of clothing: shoes; outerwear; and accessories such as glasses, bandanas and caps. Clothes can have up to four ability slots. Of these, 1 main (primary) and 3 additional (secondary). Additional slots, or rather the abilities in them, are locked on freshly purchased items, to unlock them you need to accumulate a certain amount of experience on them. The main ability will give a greater bonus than the additional one, but they cannot be changed. And additional ones are possible, but only by the will of randomness; alas, you cannot independently decompose the abilities. In addition, if the item has less than 3 additional slots, you can buy more, but still no more than three. A character named Spike, who looks like a punk and lives in a landfill in the alley, will help you with this. He also changes abilities if all slots are unlocked. All this costs in-game money, there are no microtransactions here. The choice of clothes is quite wide, you can always dress up and become the first hipster in the village. Or a collective farm punk.

We’ve sorted out weapons and clothing, let’s talk about game modes. Firstly, there is a single player mode, which offers quite a fun, but not very long game company. The plot in this mode tells of the capture by enemies, called octolings, of important, important electric fish zapfish, they are the source of food in this universe. In addition, when playing a story campaign, you can find scrolls telling about the history of the game world, and drawings of some weapons, which can then be used in a network game.

The second single player mode is Amiibo Challenges. Three of the five themed figures will unlock 15 additional challenges (5 for each figure), completing which will unlock small in-game rewards that are otherwise unavailable. But there is nothing special or unbalanced there. The remaining two figures are dedicated to the sisters Callie and Marie (Calie Marie, pun, you get the idea)!), news presenters who report on map updates and rotations. These test figures do not open but provide an opportunity to watch clips with fiery songs and dances of the sisters. Fanservice as it is, I still haven’t been able to understand why it’s needed.

The third non-online mode is Battle Dojo, it’s for two players and it’s weird. In it you need to shoot paint balls, whoever shoots the most wins. No splitscreen, the second player takes the Pro Controller while the first is hunched over the Wii U Gamepad screen. It’s inconvenient, and the gameplay in this mode is boring.
One way or another, all non-network modes here are purely secondary, this is still a multiplayer game. The main online mode in the game is called regular battle. It features regular 4v4 battles, with the goal of painting as much as possible. Each battle increases the amount of experience, winning the battle will give even more experience. We accumulate experience, increase the level, unlock abilities on items. The higher the level, the more weapons available. Nothing unusual.
By level ten, Ranked Battle becomes available, a ranked battle. There is a rating system from C- to S+, in theory fighters of approximately the same rank should fight each other, but in reality it doesn’t always work that way. Winning a Ranked Battle increases your rating, losing decreases it. Ranked battle has 3 combat modes: the first is called Splat Zones, in which you need to capture (paint over) and hold one or more points on the map, similar to the King of the Hill mode in other shooters; the second is called Tower Control, it is similar to the Payload mode in Team Fortress 2, but the trolley can be pushed by both teams, each in its own direction, towards the enemy base; the last mode is called Rainmaker and in it both teams want to bring the huge wunderwaffle of the same name to the enemy base, but this is not so easy – the player who took this thing walks slowly, cannot dive into the paint, but can shoot painfully and quite far, and when touching the ground (for example, when the carrier dies), Rainmaker surrounds himself with a weak force field that must be destroyed in order to raise the cannon.

Modes change in accordance with rotation every 4 hours, along with map rotation. One of the weak points of the game lies in the rotation of cards. Firstly, there are only 16 cards. Secondly, in rotation at one time there are only 2 maps for regular battle and 2 maps for ranked battle. Given the current frequency of rotation, maps get boring very quickly; Nintendo should either make more frequent rotations or expand the number of maps in them. But what is not there is not there. The maps are generally quite varied and have slight differences in structure depending on the game mode.

Port Mackerel, my favorite map

There is also the opportunity to play online with friends, and in three options. The first option is closed custom matches, from two to eight players, with a choice of mode and map. No rank or experience is awarded in this mode. The second option is to create a squad of two (in this case, the missing players for the team will be found by the server) to four people and go to gain rank in ranked battle. Any online shooter has similar features. The only unusual thing is that both modes were not in the release version of the game; both of these modes were added in a major August update.
Do you know what we haven’t talked about yet?? About management. It’s hard to explain, it’s better to try it yourself, but let me try. There are two schemes, one uses motion control for aiming, the second uses the right stick for the same.

Surprisingly, playing with motion controls is quite convenient. You wave the gamepad, the crosshair moves across the screen, the “Y” button resets the crosshair position to the default (center of the screen). There is no need to point the gamepad at the screen. With the right stick in this control mode we rotate around our axis (and pressing it uses the special if it is charged), with the left we run by pressing ZL (L2 or LT on other consoles) – we dive into the ink, pressing ZR (R2 or RT) we shoot, R (R1 or RB) is used for sub-weapons, the “X” button is responsible for the jump. Without motion control, the right stick is also used for aiming, all other buttons remain unchanged. Made conveniently, but not without oddities, for example, if you call special, there is no way to remove it without using it.
This is all great, but the main question is how it all plays? You know, the game is played cheerfully and cheerfully. We run, paint, kill enemies, paint again, die, respawn, jump to a teammate, fight off the enemy’s attack, counter-attack, die again… As soon as you get used to the local controls, many actions are performed simply automatically. The pace of the game is crazy. I especially enjoy playing Ranked Battle in Splat Zones mode, although here you have to be lucky with your team – everyone needs to know their function, think quickly, act quickly, and shoot accurately. The rank during the game jumps back and forth.
The game does have problems. Some are quite serious and actually interfere with play and enjoyment. Apparently, Splatoon servers are located only in Japan. But that’s not certain. Perhaps the game just has big problems with the network code. But there is no other way to explain why the game periodically starts doing strange things. Sometimes you get killed by a sniper before you even see the laser sight aimed at you, sometimes you can enthusiastically shoot an enemy player within a few seconds, and he won’t even try to die. Sometimes these and many other strange things happen in your favor too. We can assume that my ISP is to blame, but with other network games (for example RE:R, Mario Kart 8 or SSB) there are no such problems, everything works well, even connection dropouts are very rare. And here comes the real attack. How, in such situations, Nintendo is trying to orient the game towards eSports is not at all clear. Although, I repeat, maybe it’s just me who was unlucky.

More objective problems are: a small number of cards; not too large a real number of weapons – most of the barrels turn out to be just modifications of already open ones, with modified sub and special; and, perhaps, the most important drawback is monotony. Sadly, the game will get boring sooner or later. After about the 20th level in the game, apart from pumping up your rank (which is quite problematic due to network problems), there is nothing to do, new content is no longer opened, and by this time the old one has already been explored and even become boring. But before that the game is very, very pleasing and fun.

Kali and Marie announce new rotation

Perhaps it’s worth stopping and taking stock. I’ll say right away – the game is good. But sometimes I hate her. But she’s good. No, really, it’s very interesting to play. The first couple of months after the purchase, it was impossible to drag me away from the game, I wanted to play more and more, it was interesting, new content opened up, new cards appeared (yes, from the very beginning there were not even 16 of them), it was cheerful and fun. Now nothing new is being discovered, interest is no longer supported by anything. Even adding new clothes didn’t help much. And coupled with the presence of network problems, the game infuriates much more often than it should. But I repeat, the game is good, it is very fun and cheerful to play. And the first impression of the game is not at all like anything you’ve played before. If you have a Wii U or are planning to buy a Switch, I recommend paying attention to Splatoon, the game has every chance you will like it. My approval.

Good day to you, reader. Since there were no other options, I’ll start with the banal. No, not with Mario.
